Jeep Grand Cherokee Air Suspension Problems: Service Air Suspension, Stuck Heights and What FCA Fixes

Side view of an SUV with the five Quadra-Lift heights from the 2024 manual: Off-Road 2 plus 60 mm, Off-Road 1 plus 40 mm, Normal, Aero minus 21 mm front and 25 mm rear, Entry/Exit minus 46 mm front and 50 mm rear, with the speeds that move between them

“Service Air Suspension” on a Grand Cherokee cluster has had three different causes in FCA’s four bulletins for the 2021 and later WL generation, and none of them is a compressor: front air lines pinched under the body control module on 2021 trucks, lines not pushed home at the fast-down leveling valve on 2023 trucks, and, twice, software in the air suspension control module (ASCM) that stored U0300 and either refused to raise the vehicle or raised it to Off-Road 2 on its own. The software cases are a reflash, a 0.2 hour labor operation; the pinched lines are repaired with unions, and the unseated ones pushed in to the colored tape and pulled to prove it.

The heights themselves are not faults, and the 2024 owner’s manual puts numbers on them: Off-Road 1 raises the vehicle about 40 mm, Off-Road 2 about 60 mm (75 mm on the Trailhawk), Aero lowers it 21 mm at the front and 25 mm at the rear, Entry/Exit 46 mm at the front and 50 mm at the rear, and each change has a speed that triggers or cancels it. A Grand Cherokee that drops out of Off-Road 2 at 26 mph, or sinks into Aero in Sport mode at any speed, is doing what the manual says. Below: what each message and code has meant, the three places FCA’s bulletins look before a compressor, and what the “reset” people search for actually is.

Quick answer

Read the codes first; the two line cases both put up “Service Air Suspension”, and the software cases come with the check engine light and U0300.

What you see Where to look What to do first
“Service Air Suspension”, slow or denied height changes, uneven front (2021 WL built to Sept 1, 2021) Front air lines under the body control module (02-007-21) Inspect the lines at the module’s mounting studs for pinching
Check engine light, C15A1-00 or C1509-00 Low Airmass, one corner sagging (2023 WL built to May 16, 2023) Five air lines at the fast-down leveling valve (02-006-23) Push each line in to the colored tape, then push-pull-push
Check engine light, U0300, manual requests ignored or vehicle rises to Off-Road 2 by itself (2023 WL) ASCM software (08-159-23) Reflash, no part
Check engine light, U0300, lowers but will not raise, “selected ride height not permitted due to payload” (2024 WL) ASCM software (08-138-25) Reflash, no part
Will not change height on a cold morning Compressor fuse, then moisture (FCA STAR case, no model years named) Fuse first; an open fuse is replaced on its own, with a dryer purge and nitrogen fill

Each row has more than one cause behind it; the build date and the stored codes narrow it, and the bulletin’s own diagnosis closes it.

The heights, and what moves them

The 2024 manual gives the WL five positions. Off-Road 1, about 40 mm up, takes one push of the UP button below 38 mph, and the vehicle drops back to normal after more than 20 seconds between 40 and 50 mph or above 50 mph. Off-Road 2, about 60 mm up, 75 mm on the Trailhawk, takes two pushes from normal or one from Off-Road 1 below 20 mph, and drops to Off-Road 1 above 25 mph. Aero, 21 mm down at the front and 25 mm at the rear, comes in by itself after more than 20 seconds between 62 and 66 mph or above 66 mph, goes out after more than 20 seconds between 30 and 35 mph or below 30 mph, and comes in at any speed in Sport mode. Entry/Exit, 46 mm down at the front and 50 mm at the rear, takes two pushes of DOWN below 4 mph and clears with two pushes of UP or by driving over 6 mph. Selec-Terrain changes the height by itself when the terrain switch is moved.

Four rules from the same pages get reported as faults. Every change needs the engine running, and lowering stops with any door open. The rear rises first and the front lowers first, to keep the headlights out of oncoming traffic. The system runs briefly after the engine is switched off to correct the parked position, which the manual calls normal. And the automatic drop into Entry/Exit, if switched on in Uconnect, only happens in Park with the terrain switch and transfer case in Auto and the vehicle at Normal or Aero height, not from an off-road height.

What FCA’s bulletins blame, year by year

Bulletin 02-007-21, for 2021 WL trucks built on or before September 1, 2021, is the pinched-line case. The complaint is “Service Air Suspension” with up to eight codes: C1556-16 height sensors implausible, C1567-85 and C1569-85 left and right front level signal above range, C15A2-00 system unlevel, C15A1-00 unable to obtain desired ride height, C15A0-01 and C220C-98 for module temperature above threshold, and C15AD-92 ride height system performance. Owners noticed slow height changes, changes denied because the module timed out, an uneven front, or no air suspension at all. The cause, where the inspection finds it, is the front air lines pinched under the body control module at its mounting studs; the repair pulls the module and repairs the lines with unions, after the front springs have been deflated to the reservoir with the scan tool and the readings checked, because the bulletin warns that a pinched line can hold pressure the deflate command cannot reach.

Two places the Grand Cherokee air lines let go: pinched at the body control module mounting studs on 2021 trucks built to September 1, 2021, and not pushed to the colored tape at the fast-down leveling valve on 2023 trucks built to May 16, 2023

Bulletin 02-006-23, for 2023 WL trucks built on or before May 16, 2023, is the unseated-line case, and it was also issued as Rapid Service Update 23-242. The complaint is a check engine light with C15A1-00 or C1509-00 Low Airmass, “Service Air Suspension”, one corner sagging, or a height the vehicle cannot reach. The technician raises the vehicle and checks that all five air lines at the fast-down leveling valve are bottomed out up to the colored tape on each line; if any sits short, all five are pushed in and proved with a push, pull, push test. The inspection pays 0.3 hours, the seating 0.4.

Two bulletins are software. 08-159-23, for 2023 WL trucks, stores U0300-00, internal control module software incompatibility, with the check engine light; owners found manual leveling requests ignored, or the vehicle raising itself to Off-Road 2. 08-138-25, for the 2024 WL Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L, revising a January 2024 bulletin and dropping its build dates, stores the same U0300 with the opposite complaint: ride height disabled, the vehicle lowers but will not raise, and the cluster says “selected ride height not permitted due to payload”. Both are a reflash of the ASCM, a 0.2 hour labor operation, with a battery charger holding 13.2 to 13.5 V during the flash.

Drawing of the U0300 software case: the vehicle lowers but will not raise, check engine light on, fixed by a reflash of the air suspension control module; on 2023 trucks the same code raised the vehicle to Off-Road 2 on its own

Quadra-Lift under the same sales code on the 2022 Grand Wagoneer got bulletin 02-001-22 Rev A, whose inspection list for unsold trucks built on or before November 15, 2021 reads like an inventory of ways the system arrives inoperative: an ASCM connector not fully seated, the compressor vent hose not connected, air lines not seated, a ride height sensor off its control arm, shipping caps left on the vent hose; sold trucks built before February 15, 2022 got C15AE-00, compressor pressure line leak. For a cold morning, FCA’s STAR case S1723000007, written for the four-corner system without naming models, starts at the compressor fuse: open, it is replaced on its own, the dryer purged and the system filled with nitrogen; good, the active codes lead, and with none the suspension is run through each position and watched.

Compressor fault, or something else?

Symptom Competing causes Clues that shift suspicion
Will not raise, lowers fine ASCM software (2024 WL); payload; a leak U0300 with the check engine light and the payload message is the 08-138-25 case; a real overload clears when the load does; a leak shows as a corner down
One corner sagging, “Service Air Suspension” Line not seated at the leveling valve (2023 WL); pinched line (2021 WL); a spring or line leak C1509-00 Low Airmass on a 2023 truck built to May 16, 2023 sends the technician to the five lines and the tape; a 2021 truck’s codes point under the body control module; outside both windows the single-corner page covers how overnight behaviour steers the search
Height changes slow or refused Pinched lines (2021 WL); speed rules; doors; module temperature C15A0-01 and C220C-98, module temperature above threshold, are among the codes the pinched-line bulletin lists; a change refused at 45 mph for Off-Road 1 is the manual’s rule
Vehicle dropped to Aero on its own More than 20 seconds at 62 to 66 mph or above 66 mph; Sport mode; a Selec-Terrain change All three are in the 2024 manual; a drop with a warning is something else

What to check first

  1. The build date against the two line bulletins. A 2021 WL built on or before September 1, 2021 gets the lines under the body control module inspected; a 2023 WL built on or before May 16, 2023 gets the five lines at the fast-down leveling valve inspected, and if one sits short of the tape, all five pushed in and tested; if all five are home, the bulletin says so: normal diagnosis. Both bulletins went out as VIN-listed service actions, so a dealer can check the VIN against them.
  2. The codes, read as a set. U0300 with the check engine light is software on the 2023 and 2024 trucks; C1509-00 Low Airmass is the leveling-valve lines on the 2023 window; the eight codes of 02-007-21, with temperature codes among them, are the pinched lines. The chassis code page explains why a C-code names a condition, not a part.
  3. Tire/Jack Mode before anything is lifted. The 2021 bulletin says it in so many words: the air suspension must be disabled before lifting the vehicle or performing any work, and the Uconnect “Tire Jack Mode” is the preferred way, because the scan tool’s disable routine lasts one ignition cycle and driving above 5 mph switches it back on. The leak test page has the overnight and soapy-water sequence for a corner that is down with no code to blame.

Can you drive on it?

Height changes that match the manual’s speed rules are not a fault. With “Service Air Suspension” and the vehicle level, none of the bulletins tells the driver to stop; the manual’s warning about the system is about service, since it “uses a high pressure volume of air”. A vehicle stuck at Entry/Exit has 46 to 50 mm less clearance than normal.

Stop driving if:

  • a corner stays visibly down after the engine has run and the doors have been closed;
  • the vehicle is stuck at Entry/Exit and the road ahead has less clearance than that height allows;
  • a corner is down far enough that the tire is near the arch; that vehicle goes on a flatbed, tied down in Transport Mode, and if the mode cannot be set, the manual’s example being an engine that will not run, the straps go over the tires, not to the body.

FAQ

How do I reset the Jeep Grand Cherokee air suspension?

There is no reset button; the “reset” people search for is a mode in the Uconnect Suspension settings. Tire Jack Mode disables leveling for a wheel change, the Auxiliary Mode setting holds Transport Mode and Wheel Alignment Mode, and Auto Entry/Exit switches the automatic drop on or off. None of them is a fault repair; in the bulletins, codes are cleared after the line is seated or the module reflashed.

What does “Service Air Suspension” mean on a Grand Cherokee?

The module has a fault to report, and in the WL bulletins it has come with pinched front lines, with lines not seated at the leveling valve, and with the U0300 software code, and the code decides which. The 2024 manual also has a “Display Suspension Messages” setting that limits the cluster to suspension warnings only.

Why does my Grand Cherokee lower itself at highway speed?

Aero: after more than 20 seconds between 62 and 66 mph, or above 66 mph, the vehicle drops 21 mm at the front and 25 mm at the rear, and comes back up after more than 20 seconds between 30 and 35 mph. In Sport mode it goes to Aero at any speed. The default height the system returns to can be set to Normal or Aero by holding that position for 2.5 seconds.

Why won’t the air suspension work in the cold?

FCA’s cold-weather case notes start at the compressor fuse: an open fuse is replaced on its own, not with a compressor, the dryer is purged and the system filled with nitrogen, and the case has the intake hose checked for pointing downward so water does not collect in it. A good fuse sends the diagnosis to the stored codes.

Do the heights on this page apply to my year?

The figures are from the 2024 WL manual and the bulletins cover 2021 to 2024 WL trucks with sales code SER; an earlier Grand Cherokee’s manual gives its own heights and speeds.

How much does Grand Cherokee air suspension repair cost?

None of the documents publishes a price. They publish labor allowances, which are not quotes: 0.2 hours for either reflash, 0.3 hours to inspect the five lines at the leveling valve and 0.4 to seat them. Do not approve a compressor on the message alone; the codes, and on the two build windows the line inspections, come first.
